Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically, which we share with Chickens, Cats, Guinea Pigs and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I work as an environmental educator, lecturer, writer and Forest School leader at Moors Wood . I am a Master Composter and have spent the last 11 years as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council. I offer talks and run workshops and events where we talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. We also make crafts and have fun.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun. To learn more about us click on the About Compostwoman tab and remember to click on the photos to make them full size!

Produce today

it has been a disapointing day in many ways....but a good one overall!

I still feel poorly and so I didn't go and help a friend at a show with a compost stall.

I got out on the mower this morning as it FINALLY stopped raining long enough for the grass to be slightly dry.....but after a short while it rained AGAIN...

Compostman started to lift some spuds but had to stop due to rain...but he got another 35 Ils up

today 4 eggs ( thank you Henny, Ginger, Attila and Cathy)
I harvested
6 Kg tomatoes
3 Kg courgettes
1 Kg cuccumber
which will be going in the drier and freezer tomorrow

and there are a load of cherry toms waiting to be picked but it got too dark!

Compostgirl and I went into Ledbury to get supplies for the Hens..I ran out completely of Layers pellets ( they seem to be eating an awful lot at the moment!) so I got another 25 Kg sack, a 5 Kg bag of chick crumbs and a 5 Kg bag of corn...all organic ( of course) We also got another drinker for the hens and had a wander round the Countrywide Store one of my favourite shops! ( sorry I am funny like that!)
and tea and cake in the cafe...

Compostgirl is on a soft diet at the moment at she has finally lost a baby incisor today...a large tooth which came away with a fair amount of blood at the lunch table! ( poor CG...she was quite upset!) so for supper tonight she had vegetable soup, a hummous sandwich, some soft cheese and breadsticks, a yoghurt, some very soft cereal and milk and a home made tea cake and butter.

So 5 good things for today

1 Lots of produce today (finally! the dull weather has slowed every thing down)
2 Compostgirl's tooth has finally come out after weeks of wobbling
3 Sweetiepie is still sitting on her eggs
4 Had a nice trip into Ledbury with Compostgirl
5 Sid is snuggling up with the terrible twosome kittens ...
