Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Pause to catch breath...........

Hello all!

I haven't posted for a while, have been soooooooooo busy recently!

Now very busy working in the garden and the veg plot, planted spud 2nd earlies last weekend also my broad bean plants are now in the ground as are the garlic plants. Lots of digging and composting going on as well............

Lots of seedlings growing in the warm, tomatos, peppers, aubergines, salads of all sorts and I am about to plant lots of courgettes, squashes, cucmbers and melon seeds now there is some room in my heated propagators....

out in the garden mr cw has been making more bird boxes and we have been pruning all the shrubs, trying to get them all done before it is too late!!!

Also mr cw has pruned all the apple trees - something which all our cider apple growing farming neighbours have also been doing round here - the air is full of the fragant scent of burning applewood from the pruning bonfires - ahh lovely!

Also the wind blew over some trees in the wood and compostgirl has appropriated one as a den !

Recent news

Just finished a "Paediatric First aid" course so now feel more competant to deal with any emergencies whilst I am at work (or at home). The course was excellent and covered both adult and child first aid.

As I work with children as an Environmental Educator and Playworker I thought it was quite important to be qualified - I have had a first aider qualification in the past but let it lapse so had to do the full course again. BUT I am glad I did! Things have moved on so much in the last 20 years ( which is when I first did a St Johns First Aid at Work 4 day course)and the advice on CPR etc had changed quite a bit!

Feel good about doing the course, anyway and the training provider was really good

Well, although we are self sufficentish for about 9 months of the year ( more if you like eating kale LOTS - I don't) We get a veg box, organic of course, local of course , to see us through the "hungry gap" when those who grow their own, but have run out of their own and need to buy from some-one else.....have to buy veg.......

We have gone to SHARED HARVEST this year - very good, very local cost £10 for this lot and very helpful.............
