Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Saturday 5 good things

Well its a bit hard to think of them today as we all three are poorly with some nasty bug :-(

but here goes!
( and this covers produce for today as well....)

1 We all slept in late this morning as we all are poorly

2 Hens laid 5 eggs ( plus a useless one from Genghis Hen )THANK YOU HENS
3 So far have around 70 lbs of spuds harvested and thats less than half the plot, so fingers crossed the blight isn't too bad
4 New AV equipment sounds good
5 Kittens and Sid seem to be getting along a little better!

AND
6 Managed to sort out Blogger problem and get Sitemeter back on blog

plus some pictures of various flowers decorating/drying yesterday ;-O

This is a Monarda didyma...Bergamot or Scarlet Bee Balm...but I have NEVER had this double flower before!!

Loss of blog

Sorry if anyone couldn't get on here earlier.....there has been a HUGE problem with Sitemeter apparently as well as Blogger incorrectly labelling lots of blogs as spam...so no one ( including me!) could get on here.

I have managed to fix the problem by removing Sitemeter temporarily...and hopefully I will have no further problems!

Friday produce

Eggs 4 (Thank you Henny, Ginger, Attilla and Wednesday)

hmm....perhaps letting Henny and Ginger go back to the Eglu, leaving Thursday back in with Attilla the Hen and Genghis Hen was a bad move? as she has not laid an egg since being put back in with them....:-O

Rose petals laid out to dry, big bunches of Lavender, various flowers and herbs for drying for flower arrangements hanging up in the Study, Sage that I dried bottled for later use ( its good stuff, too!)Last lot of Lavender stripped off the stems and bottled up for later use. Also made some craft things in honour of Lughnasadh
....a corn dolly, some Lavender favours

Mmmmm I am relaxed and fragrant, now !

Some courgettes nearly ready but I will get then tomorrow morning I think
Ditto some more tomatoes, they will be just that little bit sweeter if I pick them tomorrow!

5 good things today

1 The latest cuteness from the kittens is..... they have adopted my best crimson velvet cushions on the sofa and have spent ALL day on them asleep in the cute way...and Sid has made me laugh, he played like a mad thing with Compostgirl and a soft ball for ages today and then has spent the day running around the wood like a mad puss, hunting ... and when he is bigger I suspect he will take on Kitty Cat's mantle as Rat Killer Supreme!

2 The blighted spuds which Compostman has dug up are actually looking good!
They were in early and got growing well so we WILL have some to store by the looks of it!

3 Am VERY happy to have new kittens...I have missed cuddling Monty puss soooo much over the last year...Kitty is not a cuddle cat...he is a "sit by you quietly" cat....

4 I have harvested lots of herbs and flowers today for decorations so the study now smells of greenery and floral scents :-)and I have made a corn dolly and some lavender favours.

5 My last batch of Sage has dried beautifully and I have bottled it for use later on, and I have got some Lavender, Rose petals, Basil and Oregano on the go drying now.
