Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

What I did when we had no broadband #3 Green Gathering and meeting more friends

While I was absent from The World of Blog, at the very end of July I went to The Green Gathering. Some of you may remember me saying I went to The Big Green Gathering near Cheddar in 2007 - this is the smaller, younger cousin of that. Same ethos, same amazing ideals and many of the same friends to meet up with, some of whom I have not seen since the last one in 2007!

The Festival is now based near the racecourse at Chepstow, so I decided to use my car and had a very pleasant journey which also involved visiting lots of friends and dropping off various Freecycle items on the way down the Wye Valley. I arrived at lunchtime at the car park by the racecourse and found it was only a short walk to get to the site.

I got my stuff together and set off up the hill and through the woods, the gates to the Festival parkland was guarded by this amazing Woodpecker drilled natural totem tree :)

Parkland which held the Festival.

Excellent recycling facilities

Me meeting up with John "Compost" Cossham - my composting hero and someone I have wanted to meet for years - we are friends and have been for many years but never managed to actually meet up in RL until now :)

John was in charge of Recycling and Composting at the Festival and apart from the really excellent recycling segregation system he also had a really excellent composting facility going - he had only been there for four days! I was lucky enough to get a detailed tour which I really loved - I guess John and I  find composting endlessly facinating :)

John is also a talented performer and entertainer working as "Professor Fiddlesticks" - he made me a balloon dog and the patter which went with it was hysterical :) We were rolling around laughing :)

Fabulous view across the Severn Estuary.

I also met up again with Carol Hunt of  Edible Wild who I have not seen since 2007, and Deb Millar of  Hallr Wood who is a fellow Forest School Leader and Fb friend so it was great to meet her in RL as well. Sorry didn't get pictures of them though. Links to their websites are highlighted above.

I had a lovely day, met up with old friends, made some new ones and listened to some great music. I also went to an inspirational workshop and found much to inspire me :)

A great day away  :)
