Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically, which we share with Chickens, Cats, Guinea Pigs and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I work as an environmental educator, writer and Forest School leader at Moors Wood and I also volunteer as a Master Composter and hens@home mentor with Garden Organic. We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

On hearing the first cuckoo in Spring...

Tonight I heard my first cuckoo of 2013, 6 days later than usual, but still, how lovely to hear them again.

There is a beautiful tone poem of this name written by Delius in 1912. You can read a bit more about it here.

And you can listen to it by clicking in the link here

Anyone else heard a cuckoo?

  1. No cuckoo yet - although it has been that noisy with the wind I probably couldn't have heard one anyway - seen my first swallow though.

  2. We don't have cuckoos in this part of the world, though I'd like to hear one.
