Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Update on Tabitha

Tabitha Cat now fully restored to health - hunting, purring, pushing us out of bed etc etc . All scabs fallen off, huge wound scab gone and new skin growing new fur :-)

Many thanks to Mike the vet, who did a wonderful job and saved her life.

  1. Good to hear that Tabitha has made a full recovery.

We were very unfortunate back in June. We left for a week for our middle daughter's wedding and I had a neighbour's daughter come to check on the 'small' animals for me while I was gone.

When we came home, three of our kitties had disappeared. Ole Grizzly, he was 16, Kit-Cat she was 6, and Joe (5). I could understand Grizzly. But the other two? Kate didn't know what happen to them either. We do have a lot of hawks, eagles and foxes. I guess that is the life of a barn cat.

  2. Good news. Our cays are so precious to us too. We had to put one of ours down this year (she was dying at the time). It just guts you. Love reading your blog
