Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Catchup

Hmm. so. been a bit busy lately :) Was unwell for a number of weeks and then have had half term and all sorts to deal with :)

Archery has been fun - we have all upgraded our equipment and are shooting better as a result which is very gratifying. Compostman has lot of new bits of equipment to keep him occupied and is now officially the fixer upper of all things fletch-y and arrow- y and bow-y related . I expect there is a proper term for that but I can't find it!

Compostgirl has won another writing competition :) Proud parent moment :) She is showing real talent and skill :)

Chickens continue to entertain, especially the Seramas :)

Have now lost nearly six stone in weight and am re discovering clothes which I packed away nearly 14 years ago, consigned to languish in the loft while I got fatter. No more - they are back on my increasingly smaller and curvier body :)

Garden largely put to bed for the winter, salads sown in the poly tunnel and various winter brassicas growing well.

really enjoying both Dr Who and Marvel Agents of Shield on TV whilst crocheting in front of the woodburner

  1. My parents took up archery for a while back in the 1960s, I remember them having friends round and the targets being set up on the lawn. I also remember the huge bruises my mother had on her arm, which is probably the reason they finally gave it up! Well done Compostgirl and well done you :)

  2. Thank you Z :) We are really enjoying our archery as a family event each week and are apparently getting pretty good at it. Which is pleasing :)
but yes today we used very basic bows at the competition to level the playing field for all and I and several others got nasty arm bruises despite assorted arm protector stuff. Even training bows can bite back!

  3. Well done on your compost work/life and your weight loss. Archery has always sounded interesting. Hope you are feeling better. Thanks for your blog lots of good realistic info on compost, gardening and living even from a different hemisphere (to Australia). Chickens are never boring - I'm just hoping I've managed to stop one of mine getting over a 6ft fence because there are wild dogs/dingo crosses around.
