Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Hurrah! First tomato picked!

Oooh! LOOK what I found in the Polytunnel!

Nestling in amongst the leaves of a Latah tomato plant.

The FIRST TOMATO of 2012 from the Polytunnel!

Small but perfectly formed :-)

  1. That's early. We'll be waiting a few more months as ours are on the front doorstep, which gets quite a bit of sun, but only when the weather is warm and fine of course.

How are your new chooks, btw?

  2. Oooh...you lucky thing.

Mine are ages away, I noticed the first formings of tomatoes yesterday, they are hard and green and the size of a marble!!

Oh, how I miss my polytunnel, this greenhouse of mine with all it's draughts is just not the same.

  4. Hi Karin, new girls doing well, feathering up and laying sometimes - weather is not helping their laying, too gloomy

Hi Sue I have loads of toms sitting there waiting to turn red - good size just not turning yet. Much be the gloom affecting them, as well!

Hope we get some sunshine so both yours start as well

  5. First tomato!!! You are kidding me right? In North Yorkshire it's rained so much and we've had so little sun our tomatoes haven't even flowered yet. In fact, the whole garden is at a standstill...... well apart from the grass and hedges which seem to grow at an alarming rate! lol xxx
