Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

A Rant about Bloody con trails!!!!

These are a couple of photos I took of the sunset today...lovely aren't they ? BUT...see the lines??
They are aeroplane condensation ( con) trails.............

See how many there are??

IMO loads of aeroplanes flying to mainly pointless destinations carrying people on mainly pointless journeys....wasting fuel and generating a shed load of Carbon Dioxide in the process....

Ok some flights are necessary, and some people need to make some flights...BUT come on..........

Ggggrrrrrrrrrr

It makes me very worried when every night I see more and more flights overhead whilst at the same time I read, hear and know about the CO2 driven climate change disaster our species seems determined to sleepwalk into...

OK I use fossil fuel...I drive a car..I use petrol in the mower etc . BUT we try to be as fuel frugal as we can and I do not fly to Paris for £10 or whatever the latest silly offer is...just because its a cheap offer!!!! In fact I have flown twice in the last 20 years ( both flights long haul) and I have pledged to myself not to fly again unless it is a family crisis or somesuch, something I will do my utmost to stick to.
Sometimes I think we (the Human race) deserve everything which is going to happen to us, climate change wise....

cos we can be SO stupid considering we are supposed to be SO intelligent........

  1. Hi, I've just come across your very interesting and entertaining blog, and your life sounds like the one my daughter would like to have and is gradually sorting out for herself, including hens and compost lavatory. I have 3 allotments and work quite hard on them.

Your comments about aeroplanes: I know what you are saying but.....

My family has become very international. Within three years three family members, including my son, have married into families in Singapore and Thailand, and we have been to their wedding celebrations.

My step-daughter and her family live in Tasmania and we exchange visits.

My sister works in Oman, the Yemen and Socotra helping to preserve knowledge about plants as food and medicine, knowledge that is dying out as modern ways take over. We have produced a book together to help research into plant use in southern Arabia (I am an illustrator).

My husband is an academic in the global warming arena and flies to Russia and America to carry out his research in peat bogs (which emit much hitherto unmeasurable methane and CO2).

We just have to fly, and very little of it is pointless or even cheap. Just a thought.

  2. Hi Susanna

I read your comment with interest...

I , too, read what you are saying and I sympathise with your position BUT...your family chose to make the moves they did?

In my lifetime IF people emigrated then that was that...births, marriages even death had to happen without the presence of family...because that was the price to pay for emigrating.

*I* have family overseas and I have resigned myself to not seing them...thats the downside of family moving away.....

So..I understand your point of view but I don't agree with you I am afraid...

We CANNOT continue to live like this...and HOW EVER good the reasons may sound they IMO can't get round the CO2 emmisions generated which affect other people....
