Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Caerleon day out

Another day out! Wow!

This time we headed into Wales and, after a really nice sunday lunch in Raglan, had an afternoon in Caerleon, looking at all the Roman stuff there.

The Roman baths were wonderful. Very interesting and very well presented.

We then went to the Roman Museum, which was full of finds and was really good. There were some lovely engraved gem stones which had been found in the drains at the baths, tiny stones with the most exquisite images engraved. The tools made me realise how similar a life people led 2000 years ago - an axe still looks the same, as does a hammer, a chisel and so on...!

We then wandered around looking for a place to have a cup of tea and found this courtyard full of amazing carvings!

Finally we went to the Ampetheatre and Roman walls

and the Roman Barracks.

All in all, we had a lovely day out and it was a nice way to mark the end the summer holidays.

  1. Those carvings are fantastic! Just the type of thing I would love to have in my garden :)

  2. Oh how strange to find a post on beautiful Caerleon. Up the road from the Forum (where the carvings live) is a teeny tiny University where I studied!
Thank you for posting pictures of Caerleon - it made my heart leap for the olden days!
