Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Crafty round up for March

    This month I have

    • crochet many granny squares - 30 in total to keep up with one a day
    • sewed together fabric squares to make quilt
    • pieced together the strips of squares to make the quilt top,
    • part quilted the ( king sized) throw
    • made two more crochet cotton dishclothes
    • Carried out many sewing repair jobs both by hand and with machine.
    • Painted a couple of small canvases with acrylics and been content with the result
    • Done some wet felting :-)
I have also bought 20 new metal bobbins, a walking foot and  a "quilt in the ditch foot" for my sewing machine. Which have helped with the machine quilting no end :-)

        1. Crafting has taken second place to veg gardening at the moment!

      2. I love to crochet but I have never tried quilting.
I come from a long line of women who made some beautiful quilts. I need to get busy if I want to continue the tradition!
(Although, I don't feel too pressured, my BROTHER has made some fantastic quilts!)

        1. Get your brother to make the quilts and you learn another skill?

      4. I have never used a "quilt in the ditch" foot, I use the walking foot or my zipper foot if the wadding is low loft, I will have to check them out. I can not crochet. sob

        1. I had to file off the corner as it was too pointy and dug in a bit at first. It works ok and helps with the quilting. Not done much this month - been gardening instead!
