How to use The Compost Bin.

Welcome to The Compost Bin, which contains my musings on my life and things which interest me.

I live in Herefordshire with my husband and daughter; we have 4 acres of land which contains a woodland, polytunnel, small orchard, garden and veg plot. We grow our own organic produce and make lots of cider, wine, jam and chutney. We also make a lot of compost. We share our lives with 11 Chickens, 3 Cats, 3 Guinea Pigs and assorted wildlife. We try our best to live a more self reliant lifestyle, growing and making and fixing and mending and re-using and re-cycling stuff, if we can.

I used to be a Research Scientist, but that was many years ago. I now work as a freelance environmental educator/writer/forest school leader and community artist; I also spend a lot of time volunteering as a Master Composter and Master Gardener, helping people make compost and grow veg at home or at school.

I started blogging because I love to write about the things which interest me. Whether it's something I have done in the garden, an article for a magazine, a review of websites or equipment I use, a training course I have attended or "just" my daily routine - I love to write.

I hope you find something to interest you in The Compost Bin - remember to click on the photos to make them full size!

Seed order

I have abandoned crochet in favour of my seed packets today and am in the middle of an on line order to The Organic Gardening Catalogue/Chase Organics...am trying to be restrained, here...!

I get most of my seeds from them - as a Garden Organic member I get 10% off and they have a lovely range of seeds.

I also use MoreVeg for some seeds - they sell seeds in smaller quantities and also sell a few that The Organic Gardening Catalogue don't stock so are good for the varieties where I don't need so many seeds - they also sell some wonderful very early cropping tomato varieties which means I get to eat tomatoes from the polytunnel  from the start of June right through until October.

I have also sorted out all my seed packets, and put them the order I want to sow them.

Some seed potatoes arrived today :-)

In other news, it must be nearly Spring - it was still light outside at 5 pm! And we even had sunshine!

  5. Good to see I'm not the only one squeeing about spring coming. Can't wait to get out there and start planting but I've got to actually build my planting trough...hopefully this week I can get to it. I imagine son will be "helping"

  6. OGC seeds arrived last week, just the Suttons seeds to still pop through the letterbox. Peppers and early Toms already in the hot boxes in the Porch :-)

    Soon be Spring :-)
