Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Imperial hens ( with purple bums!)

The hens have been pecking poor old Cathy again, so I sprayed her last week with Gentian Violet to deter them and also as an antiseptic, just in case of any wounds.

BUT with all the wet weather we have had recently the purple was beginning to wear off and so we had another go today. This time, I remembered to wear gloves, so *I* don't have purple hands at the end! ( It takes a week to wear off *me* so I know it lasts!)I gave some to Compostman as well.

Cathy in front, Genghis behind.

Compostman and I went out into the lean to and one by one captured, up ended and sprayed Cathy, Genghis and Attilla, all of whom have bald patches from pecking to a greater or lesser degree. Attilla pecks the others and also does a patch on her own tum, Genghis pecks Cathy and poor old Cathy just gets pecked by both of them I think.

Here is poor Cathy, looking very fed up in the wind. Add in the fact that Cathy is also moulting and she looks very sorry for herself....poor old hen!

We also had another "Invasion of the Hens" today, Ginger, Attilla, Cathy and Genghis all decided it was too cold outside and as soon as the door opened...in they charged!

I love the way they stand on one leg! :-)
