Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Invasion of the hens

THIS is what happens when you leave the back door open to let the sunshine in...and walk away because you are chatting to a friend on the phone....( you know who you are!)

An INVASION!

It took me ages to chase them out! :-)))

  1. I love the close up pictures of the chickens. I am still not sure if I could cope with chickens. I am not to keen on Buggies and the like because they fly at you when not in the cage.

But if you prune/cut their wings they dont fly do they? I dont mind as long as they dont go near my head. LOL Pigeons in London have a lot to answer for. They have made me petrified of flapping things near me.

  2. Hi SoL

No hens don't fly like pigeons do...they don't fly at all if you clip the wing feathers...and even my best flier, Goldie, can only just manage to flutter up ( more wing assisted jumping really) on to my shoulder...

So no, I wouldn't worry about hens on that front...BUT you might worry about them coming in through a cat flap......

  3. I love it! Chickens in the kitchen! That would never happen at my house, as long as I have three dogs, and I imagine my cats wouldn't be too keen on a chicken invasion either. Thanks for the laugh, compost woman.
