Hello and welcome to The Compost Bin. I'm Compostwoman and I live with my family in rural Herefordshire. We have nearly four acres of garden and woodland, all managed organically and to Permaculture principles, which we share with Chickens, Cats and assorted wildlife. We also grow a lot of our own food, run courses in all sorts of things and make a lot of compost!

I am a Master Composter and have spent more than a decade as a volunteer Community Compost adviser with Garden Organic and my local Council.
I'm a self employed Environmental Educator so I run workshops and events where I talk about compost, veg growing, chicken keeping, cooking, preserving and sustainable living. I also run crafts workshops and Forest School/outdoor play sessions in our wood.

We try to live a more self sufficient lifestyle here, as best we can, while still having a comfortable life and lots of fun.

Invasion of the Hens...the Sequel!




Just for Aromatic...............this is me trying to get the Hens out of the house.....and ...you can hear their funny sounds!

Oh and I forgot to mention in the other post...Ginger has worked out how to use the cat flap..so I guess they will be inside a lot now......

    Oh compostwoman, that video has had me in stitches!! They're just like my 'girls' - I love to hear the sound of their little feet "pat, pat, patting" on the kitchen floor! One of them has a really high-pitched warble, doesn't she? .... just lovely!

    Hi Willow..the very high pitched one is Genghis hen..she is over under the window, near the guitar box....

    She makes that noise ALL the time, pretty well!...and when she is off to lay an egg, or after...well it gets very noisy around her!

    Thank goodness we don't have a cat-flap!! We did get a turkey knocking at the door a couple of times before they were confined to the field and a swallow flew in twice in the summer.

    Ginger has already taught Henny about the cat flap...so far the two of them have only got inside the boiler room...BUT they don't seem to have mastered GOING OUT AGAIN........which is a fairly critical part of cat flappery..........................

    oh dear...I forsee problems with this......
